Contract Auditor, Carbon Offsets (Energy & Industry)

SCS' Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Verification Program has been verifying carbon offsets since 2008 and to date has verified over 396 million tonnes of CO2e, providing GHG verification services to a wide array of industries including manufacturing, transportation, municipalities, and non-profit organizations.

Job Overview:
SCS Global Services Greenhouse Gas Verification Program is seeking a Contract Verifier to support carbon offset verification projects in the Energy and Industry sectors. Project types include but are not limited to manufacturing and industrial processes, methane capture and destruction, plugging of oil and gas wells, and electric vehicle charging stations. The contractor will act as an independent representative of the SCS verification team to support full audit responsibilities, including desk reviews and field inspections. Responsibilities include but are not limited to assessing project documentation for compliance with applicable assessment criteria, conducting quantitative analyses, collecting observational data, conducting interviews, and documenting site conditions to inform the overall audit process.

Ideal candidates will have experience in auditing or inspection, expertise in the energy and industry sectors, and be based in the United States or aligned time zone. Familiarity with American Carbon Registry (ACR), California Air Resources Board (ARB) Compliance Offset Program, Climate Action Reserve (CAR), and/or Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) is strongly preferred and experience with the technical applications of any of the following industries is required: plugging of orphaned oil and gas wells (OOG), landfills, biochar production, ozone depleting substances (ODS) destruction, methane abatement, concrete production, and/or hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) reclaim and destruction.

  • CA Air Resources Board (ARB) (i.e., MMC, Livestock)
  • Climate Action Reserve (CAR) (i.e., Biochar, Landfill)
  • Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) (i.e., ACM0001, AMS-III.Y, VM0038, VM0039, VM0043, VM0044)
  • Other voluntary carbon offset standards as applicable

Scope of Work:

Full Audit Support

  • Conduct desk review assessments including quantitative analyses
  • Conduct in-field observations and data collection at energy and industrial carbon offset project sites
  • Interview project personnel and document site conditions relevant to verification
  • Capture photographic and written evidence to support audit findings
  • Follow SCS protocols and checklists to ensure consistency and quality of field data


Audit Coordination

  • Independently coordinate travel logistics in accordance with SCS policies
  • Communicate with SCS verification team to align on assessment objectives and deliverables
  • Submit assessment deliverables (incl. findings and reports) within established timelines

Program Quality and Compliance

  • Maintain thorough and current working knowledge of energy and industrial program standards and protocols, as applicable (i.e., ACR, CARB, CAR, VCS)
  • Participate in training sessions as needed to maintain qualification for desk review and field verification work
  • Adhere to SCS quality and code of conduct standards

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Environmental Engineering or a related field
  • Minimum 4 years of professional experience in engineering, auditing, or inspection
  • Experience conducting desk review assessments
  • Experience conducting field assessments or inspections
  • Experience with technical applications of any of the following industries: plugging of orphaned oil and gas wells (OOG), landfills, biochar production, ozone depleting substances (ODS) destruction, methane abatement, concrete production, and/or hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) reclaim and destruction
  • Strong observational and documentation skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to travel within the United States and/or internationally
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Full professional proficiency in English
  • Comfortable working independently and coordinating remotely with a global team


Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with carbon offset verification standards (ACR, CA ARB, CAR, and VCS)
  • Experience with third-party certification processes

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to travel to energy and industrial project sites, including walking and standing for extended periods during site visits
  • Comfortable working in energy and industrial environments
  • Ability to carry light equipment (e.g., camera, notebook, GPS device) as needed for documentation

Work Environment:
This is a domestic contract position with fieldwork required at industrial project sites across the United States. The contractor will work independently in the field while coordinating closely with the SCS verification team. Site visits may involve work in industrial settings. Communication and documentation will be conducted electronically, and flexibility in scheduling is essential to meet project timelines.
