Director, Science and Commercialization

SCS Standards is an organization specializing in the development of sustainability standards and assurance systems. We are the official standards development body for SCS Global Services. We partner with corporations, industry associations, NGOs, and social and environmental stakeholder groups to facilitate and develop proprietary voluntary sustainability standards that break new ground in environmental and social responsibility and provide a platform to recognize leadership efforts in multiple industries.

Job Overview
The Director, Science and Commercialization of SCS Standards will ensure scientific integrity in the standards developed by SCS, balancing environmental and social performance with business market realities. This position will support the Executive Director to ensure standards developed by SCS meet the threshold of scientific rigor and play the role of lead scientist within the SCS Standards entity, as new standards are developed and commercialized. Furthermore, this role will lead the development of the business case for new standards development, analyzing the market opportunity and making a recommendation as to whether there is adequate business justification to proceed in the development of the proposed new SCS standard. Finally, this role will be responsible for commercialization of new standards, leading their transition from the standards development entity to commercial operation in SCS Global Services and/or other certifying organizations. The position will report to the Executive Director of SCS Standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Standards Scientific Oversight

  • Review new and existing SCS Standards to ensure alignment to best science, balancing business realities with scientific rigor
  • Participate in Standards Development committees acting as the lead scientist for SCS Standards during the standards development and revision process
  • Provide research and scientific input to the development of proprietary standards and responsible sourcing programs to protect SCS’ reputation as a credible sustainability standard developer

New Business Development and Innovation

  • Conduct ongoing market research to identify potential new areas of business
  • Research new areas of business for SCS Global Services from emerging scientific fields, evaluating opportunities and bringing them to SCS

Business Analysis and Financial Modeling

  • Develop the business model to support the business case for investing in the development of new standards
  • Work with SCS’ Director, Financial Planning and Analysis to develop forward-looking multi-year projections for new programs
  • Forecast revenue and profitability targets for conservative and likely scenarios, to support the business case for new programs

Standards Commercialization

  • Lead commercialization of new standards, supporting the transition from standards development in the standard development entity to commercial operation in SCS Global Services
  • Lead analysis of the results of pilot phases of new standards to ensure all feedback from the pilots is incorporated into the final version of the standards and the standards are auditable and operationally viable
  • Liaise with all stakeholders within SCS Global Services to determine the level of support needed to operationalize programs (IT, Finance, QA, HR, Sales, and Marketing)
  • Identify the human resources required to operate new programs, supporting recruitment and training as needed, and ensuring proper hand off of the program from the standards development team to the operational team
  • Create templatized workflow for standards commercialization

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or relevant field and
  • 7+ years of relevant work experience in strategic leadership and entrepreneurship and
  • Experience in business development and commercialization
  • Well-developed organizational, project management, and prioritization skills
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving ability
  • Complete fluency in English with work experience that involves professional and technical written and verbal communication
  • Proficient with business software including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Sales CRM systems such as Salesforce
  • Initiative, good judgment, and ability to work independently under pressure in a changing environment
  • Commitment to SCS values and environmental issues

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or relevant field
  • Professional experience commercializing new services and technologies
  • Professional experience in certification systems (auditing, assurance, sourcing)

Working Remotely
SCS is recruiting all open roles to be remote; allowing our employees the ability to work flexibly and allowing SCS as a company to diversify the experience and perspectives of our growing workforce. This is a home-office based role and may include travel with local, domestic, and/or international trips. Details will be clarified during the recruitment process.

Estimated Annual Salary
$135,000 - $150,000
